How to Perform a Steroid Injection

Are you curious about the proper way to administer a steroid injection? Look no further! Before we dive into the steps, let’s go over some preparation tips. I’ll break down the injection process into seven manageable steps. It might seem intricate, but it’s actually a quick procedure, taking only 2-3 minutes. By following these steps carefully, you can minimize unwanted side effects like pain and infection.

Steroid Injection Preparation

STEP 1: Choosing the Needle

Ask your pharmacist for a green-tipped needle. You can also specify a size code like 23g or 25g. The needle should be 2.5 centimeters long to allow the oily solution to flow smoothly. Remember, these needles are disposable – never reuse them.

STEP 2: Drawing and Expelling Air

Once you have the syringe, begin by drawing an amount of air equal to the steroid solution you’ll be injecting. Then, push this air into the vial. This step will make it easier to draw the precise amount of steroid solution (measured in milliliters) you need. It’s not essential, but it streamlines the process. (Note: This step isn’t necessary for ampule steroids.)

STEP 3: Filling the Syringe

Following step 2, carefully draw the steroid solution into the syringe.

STEP 4: Removing Air Bubbles

We’ve all seen it in movies – hold the syringe upright and gently tap the side with your index finger a few times to bring any air bubbles to the top. Push the plunger of the syringe to expel these air bubbles.

STEP 5: Disinfection

Thoroughly disinfect the injection site using alcohol or another disinfectant.

STEP 6: Inserting the Needle and Verifying Placement

Inject the needle into the disinfected area. Before injecting the solution, pull back on the plunger slightly to see if blood enters the syringe.

If blood appears in the syringe, you’ve missed the target location. Reposition the needle and repeat the process. If only air bubbles enter the syringe, you’re in the correct spot.

This step is crucial to ensure you don’t accidentally hit a vein or nerve. If you puncture a vein, you might experience coughing and a metallic taste. Remember, the goal is to

STEP 7: Injection

Congratulations on reaching step 6 correctly! If there’s no blood in the syringe, proceed to slowly inject the steroid solution.

After the Injection

Here’s what to do after the injection to ensure its effectiveness and minimize discomfort:

STEP 1

After injecting the solution, hold the needle in place for 20-30 seconds before removing it. This allows the solution to disperse within the muscle and prevents issues like leakage from the injection site or backflow. This ensures you receive the full benefit of the injected solution. (Remember, post-injection pain can sometimes be caused by leakage under the skin.)

STEP 2

Remove the needle and apply gentle pressure to the area with a cotton ball for 20-30 seconds. Afterward, massage the area lightly.

Additional Tips

  • For optimal needle placement, consider performing the injection in front of a mirror.
  • If you experience pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site after the procedure, consult your doctor.
  • Sharing needles is strictly prohibited.
  • Always dispose of used needles and syringes in a designated sharps container.
